Southwest Airlines also opposed a recommendation past year to inspect fan blades like the one that caused an engine failure, leaving one passenger dead Tuesday.

In the midst of the chaos, Shults successfully completed an emergency landing at the Philadelphia International Airport, sparing the lives of 148 people and averting a far worse catastrophe.

Investigators said a blade that broke off mid-flight and triggered the fatal accident was showing signs of metal fatigue - microscopic cracks that can splinter open under the kind of stress placed on jetliners and their engines. It added, though, that blades are swapped in and out of engines and aren't tracked. Robert Clifford, a lawyer who is suing American Airlines over another engine explosion that caused a fire that destroyed the plane, said the FAA should have required the inspections - even if it meant grounding Boeing 737s.

Seven people were treated for minor injuries following the emergency landing, while one woman died as she was almost sucked out of the broken window. One hundred twelve people died and 184 survived.

"The Wells Fargo family is saddened to learn of the death of our friend and colleague Jennifer Riordan - a community relations leader in Albuquerque, New Mexico". Passenger oxygen masks dropped from the ceiling.

"We heard a loud noise, and the plane started shaking like nothing I've ever experienced before".

A nurse began administering CPR. "There was nothing we could do to help or nothing he could do to save her and we just feel for them, 'cause I know they're grieving", Kristen McGinty said.

"A lot of people", she said, "made a lot of really hard decisions".

"Why do we choose the seats we choose?" she asked.

"I looked at her eyes and she basically gave me the approval to go back there.... I'm very concerned about this particular event", Mr Sumwalt said at the news conference at the Philadelphia airport.

Goglia said the Boeing 737 is a safe plane but engine failures occur from time to time.

Shults calmly relayed details about the crisis to air traffic controllers, and passengers commended her handling of the situation.

Andrew Needum, the EMT who tried to save Riordan's life by pulling her body back into the aircraft, said he was in "no doubt" who he would be flying with in future.

'She has nerves of steel.

"I just wanted to make sure I didn't preclude anything by taking the voucher or the check", he said. "A huge thank you for her knowledge, guidance, and bravery".

The CFM56-7B is produced by CFM International, an equal joint venture between GE and Safran Aircraft Engines. CFM said in a statement that the CFM56-7B has had "an outstanding safety and reliability record" since its debut in 1997.

Riordan was killed and seven others injured after the twin-engine 737 blew an engine at 30,000 feet on Tuesday, throwing shrapnel into a window of the plane. The plane landed safely. The blade was separated at the point where it would come into the hub and there was evidence of metal fatigue.

Southwest had previously balked at the engine manufacturer's recommendation for quicker inspections of the fan blades, The Associated Press reported.

Southwest Airlines Co confirmed Friday it has sent $5,000 checks to passengers aboard a flight that made an emergency landing this week after an engine failed, killing a passenger.
