If America were a village of just 100 people 89 of them would believe in God
The survey of some 4,700 adults here shows that 77 percent of believers also believe God or a higher power has protected them.
For instance among those who believe in the God of the Bible, 97 per cent say God loves all people compared to 69 per cent of those who believe in a higher power, 94 per cent say God knows everything compared to 53 per cent of those who believe in a higher power, and 70 per cent say he determines what happens compared to 25 per cent. Is it just the number of Americans who believe in God that is changing, or are the underlying beliefs and conceptions of God changing, too?
Smaller majorities of mainline Protestants and Catholics also indicated faith in the biblical God but significant minorities of Catholics, 28 percent, and mainline Protestants, 26 percent, indicated that they believe in a higher power or spiritual force, which is not God as described in the Bible.
An overwhelming majority of Americans, including a majority of the religiously unaffiliated - those who describe themselves, religiously, as atheists, agnostics or "nothing in particular" - say they believe in God or a higher power, according a new Pew Research Center survey conducted in December of 2017.
A full 56 percent of Jews said they believe in a higher power different from the Bible's God, and 10 percent said they do not believe in any kind of God.
Most Americans believe in a God who directly intervenes in human affairs, with almost 80 percent of USA adults saying that God or a higher power has protected them, and two-thirds say they have been rewarded by the Almighty.
Only 56 percent of the people surveyed indicated that they believe in God "as described in the Bible" and the strongest supporters of this response were Christians who self-identified as members of the historically black Protestant and evangelical traditions.

Many Americans go to church occasionally, have Christian friends, and think of themselves as Christian, while rejecting what the Bible teaches about God.
Overall, a whopping 90% believe in some concept of God, whether it be the Biblical God or some generic "higher power". In these ways, "nonwhite Democrats have more in common with Republicans than they do with white Democrats", Pew found.
More women - some 61 percent - believe in the God of the Bible than men whose percentage was 11 points lower on this survey question.
The survey also found that about half (48%) of US adults believe God determines what happens to them most or all of the time.
