A JOURNALIST who wrote about a shadowy group of Russian mercenaries operating in Syria has been found dead after apparently falling from the balcony of his apartment. Local police said they did not see any foul play, but his death prompted intense speculation among friends and colleagues.

Borodin's friend, Vyacheslav Bashkov, wrote on Facebook that Borodin contacted him early in the morning on Wednesday, the day before the fall, and told him that there was a man with a gun on his balcony, and that several others in masks and camouflage clothing were lurking in the stairwell leading to his apartment building.

Russian Federation news reports citing police say the apartment was locked from the inside, however BBC reports a friend close to Mr Borodin as saying his flat had been surrounded by security men a day earlier. Last October, an assailant reportedly hit Borodin over the head with a steel pipe shortly after he'd reported on a controversial movie about Tsar Nicholas II. Polina Rumyantseva, editor in chief of Novy Den, said that there was no reason to suspect suicide. There was no suicide note in his apartment, either, police said. Borodin was not drunk and asked Bashkov to find him a lawyer, as he thought the armed men were waiting for a warrant to search his apartment, according to Radio Free Europe.

"As Maxim had big plans for his personal life and career, there is nothing to support a verdict of suicide", she told CNN.

Russian investigative journalist Maksim Borodin of Yekaterinburg has died of injuries sustained on April 12 when he fell from the window of his fifth-floor apartment. It is claimed they were from the Wagner Group, a private army Moscow is said to be using in Syria.
