President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe shake hands
After a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday morning (AEST) at his Florida estate to discuss trade and North Korea tensions, Mr Trump revealed the United States is in conversation with Pyongyang, but would not give any additional details.
The two leaders are scheduled to have rounds of talks at Trump's retreat in Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Someone should say a prayer for Sarah [Huckabee Sanders], Mercy [Schlapp], and Raj [Shah] because rest assured, Mar-a-Lago is the last place they want the president spending his time this week", one person close to the White House told Politico.
"We've also started talking to North Korea directly", Trump said.
He also told reporters five locations are being considered for a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which was touted earlier this month.
"North Korea is coming along", said Trump.
Privately, however, White House advisers are anxious that five days in Florida will give Trump too much time to brood over Mueller, Russia, and the swirl of scandals now involving Cohen.

In February past year, the two men conferred on the dining patio after Kim had ordered the test launch of an intermediate-range ballistic missile.
Japanese officials have signaled Abe will raise his concerns about direct talks during his two-day summit with Trump. Abe is likely to push Trump to exempt Japan from new steel and aluminum import tariffs, and encourage him to rejoin the Trans-Pacific trade partnership.
Last week, Trump tweeted that he's working toward a trade deal with the country, "who has hit us hard on trade for years". U.S. officials said they expected Abe to lobby for an exemption during talks on Wednesday.
