Icelandic police said they believe Sindri Thor Stefansson escaped from a low-security prison through a window and boarded a flight at Iceland's worldwide airport using a plane ticket in someone else's name, the BBC reported.
The BBC reports that Stefansson may have fled the country on the same plane that was carrying Iceland's Prime Minister, Katrin Jakobsdottir.
But in an alarming twist, her flight is thought to have been carrying Sindri Thor Stefansson, the chief suspect in the theft of around 600 computers that has become known as Iceland's "Big Bitcoin Heist".
Ten days before his escape he had been transferred to Sogn open prison in rural southern Iceland, some 95km (59 miles) from Keflavik's global airport. Police said he travelled under a passport in someone else's name, but was identified via surveillance video. 'We are sure of that'.

White House coherence on Russian Federation sanctions questioned as Nikki Haley rebukes staff
The officials said a decision was then made to announce the sanctions as an answer to Russia's response to the strikes. The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to describe private discussions.
A passenger on the flight the escaped inmate allegedly caught told national broadcaster RUV that Iceland's prime minister was also on the plane. They are worth around $2 million and stolen from data centers around Iceland. He was moved to the open prison 10 days ago, police said. The prison has no fences, and inmates are permitted to use the Internet and telephones. Guards reportedly didn't realize Stefansson was gone until after the flight had departed early Tuesday morning. Swedish authorities will likely work with Icelandic authorities to find and arrest Mr Stefansson.
Police have arrested 22 people altogether, including a security guard, without solving the burglaries.
Helgi Gunnlaugsson, a sociology professor at the University of Iceland, said keeping a high-profile prisoner in such low-security surroundings was unusual - but more so was his organized escape. 'The underworlds are tiny and it is extremely hard to hide, let alone flee the country'.
