Dominic Thiem rallied from a set down to send Novak Djokovic packing at the Monte Carlo Masters, progressing to the quarter-finals with 6-7 (2-7) 6-2 6-3 win.

Djokovic is to play the next round against fifth-seeded Dominic Thiem of Austria to secure a place in the quarter-finals. There were no such issues on Thursday, however, as Nadal was in full control against the 21-year-old Khachanov.

Nadal has lost twice to Thiem on clay, but produced a dominant display in the French Open semi-finals a year ago en route to his 10th Roland Garros title.

The post Nadal Eases Past Khachanov In Monte Carlo Masters appeared first on Channels Television. But it was Nadal who came out on top in their most important match yet, brushing aside Thiem in straight sets in the Roland Garros quarterfinals.

The Russian could do nothing to stem the tide and was broken in the first game of the second as Nadal dominated in every facet, precise with his powerful groundstrokes from the baseline and equally impressive at the net.

Djokovic did save three set points in the first set, and the momentum carried over into the tiebreaker.

Grigor Dimitrov required three sets to get past Philipp Kohlschreiber 4-6 6-3 6-4 and Richard Gasquet thwarted a sibling match-up in the quarter-finals by eliminating Mischa Zverev 6-2 7-5.

The 24-year-old won a title on clay - Argentina Open in February, 2018 before he was sidelined due to a fractured ankle at Indian Wells last month.

The former world number four, who has struggled over the a year ago with a right wrist injury, followed up his first-round victory against Tomas Berdych with a solid display on centre court.

Djokovic was once Nadal's nemesis, even on clay. Thiem then handed Nadal his only clay court loss of the year in the Rome quarterfinals in a dominant 6-4 6-3 win.

"Ideally I'd want to be playing the way I played for so many years", said Djokovic. Serving for the match at 5-2, Goffin wasted two match points, lost the game, and then the next two for 5-5.

And the Austrian closed it out with another break on his second match point.

He took the first two games in quickfire time, before breaking again to lead 4-1 with the help of a raking crosscourt forehand.

"All I (could) do was just fight and find a way to win, how doesn't really matter". But Thiem was not willing to back off, and drew on big aces and big backhand cuts to power through the Serb. But Djokovic clawed back and took a tight breaker.

Austrian Thiem is one of the best claycourt players on tour, having reached the French Open semi-finals in each of the last two seasons, and he was impressed by his vanquished opponent's performances in Monaco. The Croatian capitalised after some unforced errors crept into Djokovic's game, though, and he was able to quickly get back on level terms in the set. They follow Goffin and Dimitrov onto Court Rainier on what promises to be another cracking day in Monte-Carlo.
