Charlie Dent Announces Plan to Resign: Proud of Work Representing the 'Sensible Center'

Dent, who has served in Congress since 2005, said on April 17 that he decided "to leave Congress in the coming weeks" after discussions with family members. That election must occur at least 60 days after he makes the announcement. Serving the people of #PA15 has been a tremendous responsibility & the privilege of a lifetime. "It is my intention to continue to aggressively advocate for responsible governance and pragmatic solutions in the coming years".

He had opposed a GOP plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act - a move that reportedly led President Donald Trump to tell Dent he was "destroying the Republican Party".

Governor Tom Wolf thanked Dent for his service in a statement.

Candidates for the special election will be nominated by their perspective parties.

Dent has cut a distinct path over the course of his seven terms in Congress.

A Lehigh County Republican who represents part of Berks County, Dent said earlier this year that he wasn't seeking re-election to another term in Congress and would leave at the end of his term. The new 7th District was created per a state Supreme Court ruling that declared Pennsylvania's current congressional districts to be overly gerrymandered. So, it's now known as the 7th District and consists principally of Lehigh and Northampton counties. That new open seat has attracted a crowded field of six Democrats, two Republicans and a Libertarian. But the new district that Dent is vacating under the 2018 lines is considered Democratic-leaning. "I respect his decision and wish him the best".

Mourinho to wield axe on United squad

Nick Mangold Announces Retirement
The Jets' future Ring of Honor inductee announced his retirement early Tuesday morning, putting an end to an 11-year career. Mangold was cut that offseason, part of a purge of veteran players so the Jets could begin a rebuilding process.

Steve Stivers, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, said in a statement the committee will "work tirelessly to keep this seat under Republican Control".

Dent is the 12th House Republican to announce step down in the face of a potential "blue wave" in the midterms.

At the time, he cited the current political atmosphere in Washington as "a factor, to be sure", adding that "even the most simple basic tasks of government have become excruciatingly hard".

Wolf, a Democrat, thanked Dent for his service. He also chairs the appropriations subcommittee on military construction and veterans' affairs.

At the time of his announcement a year ago that he would retire, National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Steve Stivers said that the lawmaker's "leadership in Congress will be sorely missed", and added that he expects the seat to remain in Republican hands.
