Animal rights groups have described footage of a bear performing tricks at a soccer match in Russian Federation as "sickening" and "inhumane".
A match in the 27th round of the Russian Professional Football League (PFL) between Pyatigorsk's "Mashuk-KMV" and Nazran's "Angusht" began with the bear, named Tim, solemnly handing the ball to the main referee of the match. TV footage from the game showed the animal being led to the Mashuk-KMV Pyatigorsk club's stadium, clapping at spectators.
A football in then placed between the brown bear's front paws, which the referee then takes before starting the game.
The clip, uploaded by third division team FC Angusht Nazran, has received almost 500,000 views on YouTube, with Peta calling the act "utterly out of touch".
"In addition to being inhumane and utterly out of touch, using a bear as a captive servant to deliver a football is downright risky", Elisa Allen said in a statement.

PETA said the incident highlights the cruel exploitation methods known to occur in Russian Federation such as "beatings, electric shocks and food deprivation" that are used to make bears perform "belittling, stupid tricks".
"The bear is the symbol of Russian Federation, so we hope the country's people will show some compassion and national pride and stop abusing them".
