WEST COAST REVOLT: California City REJECTS 'Sanctuary' Nightmare

Since the council's original March 19 vote on the ordinance, a number of other Orange County cities and the county Board of Supervisors have either passed anti-sanctuary resolutions or have joined the federal lawsuit by the Trump administration against the state's sanctuary laws. Should the lawsuit prevail, it will lead to the federal government's imposition of an anti-immigrant agenda that is uncaring, conflict-ridden and ultimately unworkable in California and in San Diego County. Demonstrators for and against the plan are expected to gather outside City Hall ahead of the council meeting set for 6 p.m.

The San Diego County supervisors who voted to support the lawsuit said for them, it was about public safety.

Many accused Gaspar of bringing the issue to a county vote to gain media attention for her campaign to take the Congressional seat of Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista. She later said she was told of at least one person on a terrorist watch list crossing into the USA illegally but was unable to provide details of the case and did not specify who provided her with that information. "We need law enforcement to protect all of our people, regardless of immigration status". It was later overturned but left a lingering resentment among the state's growing Hispanic population.

Local governments in recent weeks have taken varying approaches to weighing in on the sanctuary state case, from resolutions to voting to file lawsuits themselves.

The San Juan Capistrano City Council voted 4-1 to condemn California's sanctuary laws, the Orange County Register reported. But Brown was clear that California troops will help go after drugs, guns and criminal gangs, but not immigrants.

"Politics is very much about emotions, especially in midterms", he said. The lawsuit, filed by the Department of Justice, targets three California statutes, including the California Values Act that serves to keep state and local law enforcement agencies out of the business of mass detentions and mass deportations. After Mr. Trump was elected, lawmakers passed the measure to limit police collaboration with federal immigration agents. She said it makes no sense to have a state law barring local and federal law enforcement officials from communicating with each other to prevent illegal immigrants who are charged or convicted of crimes from being released back into the community.

"America is being ripped apart and our communities are being ripped apart", he said.

The city of Escondido voted to support the Trump administration's lawsuit earlier in April. But it's starting to spread.

During Tuesday's public meeting, sanctuary state advocates outnumbered supporters of the lawsuit: 17 registered their support of President Donald Trump's administration and 62 were against it, according to Gaspar.

The issue is politically fraught for Gaspar, the former mayor of the more politically divided North County coastal town of Encinitas.

Alameda's complicity with the agenda of #DeportICE is not surprising since the city and San Francisco Foundation pledged a combined $1.5 million in funds for legal aid services for immigrants and refugees past year.
