Canadian police: Fatalities after bus crash involving junior hockey league team

The team bus, which was travelling northbound, collided with a westbound tractor trailer on a rural highway at 5 p.m. CST Friday night.

Kennedy said this situation made him think about the Swift Current Broncos crash in 1986 when four of his teammates were killed.

As of Saturday evening, a crowdfunding effort on the website GoFundMe had raised more than $2 million for the players and families affected by the crash.

Humboldt resident Sylvie Kellington said she was shocked to learn of the crash Friday night.

Opp said the coaching staff and players from the Hawks were waiting to help. "You know everyone in the community. Everyone is in shock", she said.

As for where the money goes, Kellington said she's in discussions with Broncos management to have it deposited directly in the team's account.

This isn't the first time a crash like this has happened.

The Jets, Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames said they would be sending the proceeds from each arena's 50/50 draw to the victims and their families.
