Saudi air defences on Friday intercepted a ballistic missile fired at Jazan by Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The attack hit a vehicle transporting 20 passengers south of Taiz province, locals told Reuters. Six bodies were identified, with numerous rest charred beyond recognition, according to residents.

The thwarted attack, the latest in a series of attempted missile strikes on the southern coastal city, was announced by the Saudi-led coalition fighting the rebels.

Yemen's dominant Houthi movement said its air defense forces shot down a USA -made fighter drone on Wednesday in the Yemeni Red Sea port city of Hodeidah.

The conflict escalated in 2015 when Saudi Arabia and its Sunni-Arab allies - who accuse the Houthis of serving as Iranian proxies - launched a massive air campaign in Yemen aimed at rolling back Houthi gains.

Separately, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said a staff member was killed on Saturday in a shooting in Yemen.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief the media, the agency added.

The war has killed more than 10,000 Yemenis, mostly civilians, and displaced over 3 million others, according to humanitarian agencies.
