Gennady Golovkin to fight Vanes Martirosyan on 5 May in Los Angeles
Caroline Bateman, a Nevada deputy attorney general, suggested a punishment of six months from the day of Alvarez's first positive test on February 17.
The suspension should come with a "save-the-date" note because it means that Alvarez will be eligible to fight again after August 17, six months after the date of his first positive test.
Last month, it was revealed Alvarez had returned positive samples, which showed trace levels of the banned substance clenbuterol - a revelation that has led to a much-anticipated Las Vegas rematch against Golovkin on May 5 being cancelled.
In a statement, Alvarez' promoters Golden Boy Promotions, continue to defend Alvarez and confirm a September retur, more than likely against Gennady Golovkin, who faces substitute opponent Vanes Martirosyan on May 5th in Carson, California. Alvarez also must undergo drug tests, but no fine was recommended because past ones have been based on future purses.
But the T-Mobile Arena showdown will no longer go ahead, with Alvarez withdrawing two weeks ago in light of his suspension and ahead of a scheduled hearing with the Nevada commission this Wednesday.

Canelo and Golden Boy Promotions respect the rules of Nevada and are therefore satisfied with the settlement agreement reached today", Golden Boy Promotions said in a statement (via the Associated Press). He has maintained his innocence, and his camp blamed the adverse findings on eating tainted meat in the 27-year-old's homeland.
"Canelo looks forward to returning to the ring in September for Mexican Independence Day weekend to represent Mexico and boxing in what will be the sport's biggest event of the year".
However, Robert Bennett of the NSAC said in the complaint that "Alvarez's utilization, ingestion and/or consumption of Clenbuterol, whether intentional or not, constitutes an anti-doping violation".
