SC/ST Act: Government to file review petition
"Central government has chose to file review petition against the judgment of the Supreme Court related to SC/ST Act", Gehlot tweeted.
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi president Thol Thirumavalavan said that the Union government must also consider going for an appeal to a larger bench of the Supreme Court.
The Maharashtra government will file a review petition against the Supreme Court's order that bans automatic arrests and registration of criminal cases under the Scheduled Castes (SC) and the Scheduled Tribes (ST) Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989, a legislation meant to protect the marginalised communities from abuse and discrimination.
A two-judge Supreme Court bench of Justices UU Lalit and AK Goel cited misuse of the SC/ST Act while issuing its directive, laying down safeguards such as provisions for anticipatory bail and a "preliminary inquiry" before registering a case under the Act. The court had observed that many fake cases were filed under the Act. "In relation to the Supreme Court's decision on the Atrocities Act, the Centre has chose to file a review petition".

The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) and the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) have also conveyed their views and demanded a review of the verdict, saying the original Act, as it existed before the SC verdict, should be restored.
