"What the hell is this revisionist history lesson trying to achieve here?!?" asked father Roberto Livar in a furious Facebook post.

The school has now come out and distanced itself from the assignment.

Middle school students at Great Hearts Monte Vista in San Antonio were asked to weigh the "positive" and "negative" aspects of slavery for an assignment.

Eighth graders at Great Hearts Monte Vista North charter school Wednesday were assigned homework that suggested there is a positive side to slavery.

On the worksheet, a student wrote a dozen negative aspects of slavery - including "rape", "forced strenuous labor", and "occasional torture" - and wrote "N/A" for positive aspects.

Great Hearts Texas Superintendent Aaron Kindel issued a statement Thursday calling the assignment "very inappropriate and entirely inconsistent with Great Hearts philosophy and culture".

Representative Joaquin Castro, a Texas Democrat, called the assignment "absolutely unacceptable" in a tweet on Thursday. We want to thank the parents who voiced their concern and brought this to our attention.

Kindel said in his statement that the incident was "limited to one teacher at just one campus", and that the teacher has been put on leave while Great Hearts "collect [s] all the facts". We are removing the textbook from all of our Texas academies.

The teacher who assigned the homework has been placed on leave while the school investigates, and Great Hearts is replacing its American history textbook, "Prentice Hall Classics: A History of the United States". If we deem this textbook imprudent we will permanently remove and replace it with a history book that accurately reflects our values.

The school's headmaster and teachers will also explain to students the mistake, Kindel said. "We fully intend to make sure something like this does not happen again".
