The Ugandan army said in a statement that Ugandan soldiers serving in the AU peacekeeping mission killed 22 al Shabaab militants that had attacked the Bulamarer base and two other posts, all in the Lower Shabelle region.

Reuters has been informed that the base of the AU peacekeepers in Bulomarer was hit with an explosion from Al-Shabab militants on Sunday.

The militants initially detonated two suicide auto bombs that hit one AU vehicle and one Somali military vehicle, Somali army major Farah Osman, who is stationed near the AMISOM (African Union Mission in Somalia) base, said.

Almost 100 fighters firing propelled grenades and machine guns attacked the base occupied by the Ugandan soldiers.

"That attack was repulsed but several soldiers have lost their lives to the bomb", said Col Hassan.

Local residents said they heard twin explosions followed by sustained exchange of gunfire but did not confirm the number of casualties.

"We had a frightening day but the situation is calm now", said Nur Yusuf, a local elder by phone saying that African Union and Somali troops were patrolling the town in the evening.

Abdiasis Abu Musab, a spokesman for Al-Shabab said 14 of the group's fighters and 59 AMISOM troops were killed in the incident.

The Al-Qaeda linked Shabaab was pushed out of the Somali capital in 2011 - and subsequently other towns and cities - by soldiers from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

The attack began with a two-car bombing followed by an nearly four-hour battle between peacekeepers and al-Shabaab, according to Sgt. Omar Abdi of the Somali National Army, who spoke to Anadolu Agency by phone.
