Winnie Mandela played a key part in the anti-apartheid campaign to end white-minority rule but her place in history was also stained by controversy.
Madikizela-Mandela was jailed several times for her part in the fight against white-minority rule and she campaigned for the release of her husband at home and overseas.
Family spokesman‚ Victor Dlamini‚ said on Monday afternoon: "It is with profound sadness that we inform the public that Mrs Winnie Madikizela-Mandela passed away at the Netcare Milpark Hospital‚ Johannesburg‚ South Africa on Monday April 2‚ 2018". The cause of death is yet to be confirmed; however, TMZ reports that Winnie Mandela has been ill for some time.
