South Korean strategy heading into summit
Although the Trump-Kim summit is not a done deal yet, Pompeo's trip to North Korea was already phenomenal in its own right, and has marked a historic breakthrough in US-North Korea relations. The meeting, which Kim presided over previous year and in 2016, follows a session of the smaller and more powerful party Politburo that was held earlier this month.
Ahead of the talks, a hotline between the two capitals will be reconnected Friday.
The hotline will connect the South Korean presidential Blue House and North Korea's state affairs commission, which is headed by Kim, Yonhap news agency said.
Located near the village of Panmunjom, the Joint Security Area is the only point along the roughly 250km-long demilitarised zone where North and South Korea stand opposite each other.
The expectation was that Abe would make Trump see the importance of ensuring long-term stability for Japan and Northeast Asia as a whole as well as the security of the United States.
"It is significant (that the process) started from top down, started at the very beginning of the South Korean presidential term, which coincides with the United States presidential term", Kim Won-soo said.
"I can feel they are not satisfied with the government, and if the authorities cannot resolve the sanctions problem, such dissatisfaction will go on and on", said the trader, who asked to be identified only by his English name, Terry, for fear of repercussions in North Korea.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo met Kim this month to discuss a proposed summit with Trump and reported that the North Korean leader was not demanding the withdrawal of all USA forces as a precondition for the meeting, a US official briefed on Pompeo's trip told Reuters. Instead, he pointed to the so-called campaign of maximum pressure for bringing about the apparent change in North Korea's attitude. "If the meeting, when I'm there, is not fruitful, I will respectfully leave the meeting".
A South Korean delegation that traveled to Pyongyang reported back that Kim understands Seoul's position on holding military drills with the United States.
An official of the presidential office says the phone in Seoul is on Moon's desk.
Since February, high-level talks between Seoul and Pyongyang have occurred, leading to an unlikely invitation from the North Korean leader to Trump for a face-to-face meeting and, indirectly, Kim's first foreign visit to neighbor and ally China.
At last year's Central Committee meeting, held just six months ago, Kim bitterly criticised the "U.S. imperialists" and defended his nuclear weapons as the fruit of the "people's bloody struggle for defending the destiny and sovereignty of the country" from Washington.
Kim will go down in history as the first-ever North Korean leader to cross the 38th parallel.
Saying that Kim Jong-un's "byongjin" policy is his "survival code" the economist argued that the marginal benefits of having nuclear weapons and economic growth must be weight against the marginal cost of sanctions.
