FAA orders emergency jet engine inspections after US plane failure
The incident led the manufacturer CFM International to recommend last June that airlines carry out inspections of fan blades in its CFM56-7B engines. The directive will require an ultrasonic inspection of fan blades when they reach a certain number of takeoffs and landings.
That showed on Tuesday, as a picture of passengers in the plane following its engine failure show almost everybody wearing their oxygen masks improperly.
With a total of more than 8,000 of the engines now in use on both commercial and military aircraft, the engine is considered one of the safest and most efficient in the world.
However, Mr Martinez was attacked by some social media users for his decision to livestream the incident, which they saw as violating the privacy of other passengers on the flight.
Metal fatigue on a fan blade that snapped in the engine is suspected to be the culprit.
American Airlines has about 300 planes with that type of engine, and Delta Air Lines has about 185.
The FAA, which has issued more than 100 airworthiness directives just since the beginning of this year, has said that the time it takes to finalize directives depends on the complexity of the issue and the agency's risk assessment based on the likelihood of occurrence and the severity of the outcome.
Tuesday's accident broke a string of eight straight years without a fatal accident involving a USA passenger airliner.
A former NTSB chairman, Mark Rosenker, said in an interview that the board would look at why the FAA had not already mandated the inspections it proposed in August 2017.
Sumwalt expressed concern about such a destructive engine failure but said he would not yet draw broad conclusions about the safety of CFM56 engines or the entire fleet of Boeing 737s, the most popular airliner ever built. Federal investigators are still trying to figure out how the window came out of the plane.

The company has declined to answer questions about the status of those inspections and whether the engine that failed had previously been inspected or whether the inspections have turned up any evidence of defects or metal fatigue.
Engine-maker CFM says there are more than 8,000 of its CFM56-7B engines in operation on Boeing 737 passenger jets.
That incident also was aboard a Southwest 737 and involved the left engine and destruction of the front of the engine nacelle.
A spokeswoman said it was a visual inspection. Sumwalt said. "Right now, we just want to document everything that we can". The airline estimated that it would need 18 months to conduct the inspections. Engines are typically removed for work during a D check. Frightened passengers on board the Dallas-bound flight braced for impact as oxygen masks muffled their screams.
