Space station to hit Earth in hours

China's Tiangong-1 space lab set to fall to Earth this weekend

Nearly nine tons of space debris could fall from the sky over the next couple of days as China's first space lab - the Tiangong-1 - hurtles toward the Earth.

It poses only a slight risk to people and property on the ground, since most of the bus-sized, 8.5-tonne vehicle is expected to burn up on re-entry, although space agencies don't know exactly when or where that will happen.

The European Space Agency forecast that the station, whose name translates as "Heavenly Palace", will re-enter sometime between Monday morning and late evening.

The European Space Agency's Space Debris Office estimated late on April 1 a reentry time centred around 01:07 UTC, while the US-based Aerospace Corporation estimated 00:18 UTC April 2, similarly with a two-hour window either side.

Markus Dolensky, technical director of the International Center for Radio Astronomy Research in Australia, said witnesses to the Tiangong-1 descent should see a "series of fireballs" streaking across the sky - provided there were no clouds.

Tiangong-1 should strike Earth by early Monday, space officials say
While China always meant to let Tiangong-1 enter the atmosphere, the space authority extended the station's mission several times. Lying nearly 1,670 miles (2,700km) away from the nearest inhabited landmass, its considered the most remote place on Earth.

Emergency services in MI in the United States have been put on standby for fear China's out of control space station might crash into the state. China's chief space laboratory designer Zhu Zongpeng has denied Tiangong was out of control, but hasn't provided specifics on what, if anything, China is doing to guide the craft's re-entry.

The China Manned Space Engineering Office places the date of reentry a little later, between April 1 and April 2.

The CMSEO said the probability of someone being hit by a meteorite of more than 200 grammes is one in 700 million.

Two crews of three astronauts visited the space lab, making Liu Yang China's first woman in space in 2012, while Wang Yaping gave a live lecture from Tiangong-1 to school students in China a year later. On this mission, the crew spent 11 days at the station and completed two dockings - one computer-controlled and one crew-guided. Since then it has been orbiting gradually closer and closer to Earth on its own while being monitored. A third astronaut slept in the Shenzhou spaceships that docked with the station, which also contained facilities for personal hygiene and food preparation. It plans to send a manned mission to the moon in the future.

Experts have downplayed any concerns about the Tiangong-1 causing any damage when it hurtles back to Earth, with the ESA noting that almost 6,000 uncontrolled re-entries of large objects have occurred over the past 60 years without harming anyone.
