Starbucks' executive chairman has said he is "embarrassed" by the recent accusations of racial profiling in the company's U.S. cafes.

Starbucks announced the temporary store closing on Tuesday as the latest move to calm the public uproar after two black men were arrested for loitering at a Starbucks store in Philadelphia last Thursday.

The training will close more than 8,000 company-owned stores for the afternoon on May 29, 637 of which are located in Texas.

The curriculum will be developed in partnership with several experts such as Eric Holder, former US attorney general; Sherrilyn Ifill, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund; Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative; Heather McGhee, president of public policy organization Demos and Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, USA Today noted.

According to Starbucks, the training on May 29 is "designed to address implicit bias, promote conscious inclusion, prevent discrimination and ensure everyone inside a Starbucks store feels safe and welcome". A video of the incident was captured and posted on social media, which drew millions of views.

In the wake of the incident, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz flew to Philadelphia to meet with the two men who had been profiled by the on-duty manager and local police, offering an apology and promise to reconcile any racial biases from Starbucks and its employees.

The arrest sparked protests outside both the Spruce Street store and others in the city on Monday, where community leaders and politicians condemned the company. He said the company is looking "at all aspects of this", from training to company policy. Philadelphia-area media reported that the two were waiting for a friend.

But no matter how many millions the billion-dollar java joint stands to lose with one day of training, a number of racial justice activists and advocacy groups are not yet ready to sweep the incident under the rug. The entire call lasts less than 30 seconds.

"We need more information, but it appears to be a good first step in meeting their stated intent to provide this training to employees". An employee told them the bathroom was for customers only, yet they refused to leave the store without buying anything.

"In this situation", the spokesperson said, "the police should never have been called". Schultz said that when the manager called 911, she probably thought the police would come to her location in Center City in Philadelphia and talk to the men about why they were there.

Mr Schultz said that the two black men from Philadelphia might also be working with Starbucks in the future.
