However, an global team of scientists managed to gather the chemical composition of 350,000 stars in the Milky Way and is going to test whether the DNA of the stars that were discovered could reveal that some are more similar to the sun than others.
The treasure trove of stellar data was harvested as part of the Galactic Archaeology survey (GALAH), which was launched in 2013 with the goal of revealing how galaxies such as our own Milky Way come to form and evolve. GALAH uses the HERMES instrument - its name stands for High Efficiency and Resolution Multi-Element Spectrograph - which is installed in the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) in New South Wales, Australia.
The "DNA" traces the ancestry of stars, showing analysts how the universe went from bearing only hydrogen and helium after the Big Bang to being filled with modern life-sustaining substances.

Stars from the same cluster should inherit the same characteristics of the cloud it collapsed from, so the same chemical elements in roughly similar amounts. Unfortunately, astronomers can not collect the DNA of a star with a mouth swab but instead use the starlight, with a technique called spectroscopy. By the time the survey draws to a close, GALAH is expected to have analyzed the light of a million stars. Therefore, if astronomers are able to discover stars with spectra closely matching that of our Sun, it is extremely likely that they all "grew up" together.

Spectra is the light emitted from a star and within it, the chemical elements that make up the star can be determined as each one leaves a unique pattern of dark bands at specific wavelengths.
To collect enough photons from each star to allow the spectrograph to do its work, researchers had to spend about an hour for each star they studied.
It was considered over 10 years prior as an approach to disentangle the historical backdrop of our Milky Way galaxy. The HERMES instrument was designed and built by the AAO specifically for the GALAH survey. Estimating the wealth of every synthetic in such a significant number of stars is a big test.
Mr. Buder says: "We train [our computer code] The Cannon to recognize patterns in the spectra of a subset of stars that we have analyzed very carefully, and then use The Cannon's machine learning algorithms to determine the amount of each element for all of the 340,000 stars".
"The Cannon is named for Annie Jump Cannon, a pioneering American astronomer who classified the spectra of around 350,000 stars by eye over several decades a century ago-our code analyses that many stars in far greater detail in less than a day", Ly Duong from ANU, who was part of the team that developed the code, said in a statement.
