Gov. Bevin appoints interim Education and Workforce Cabinet secretary as Hal Heiner transitions to state Board of Education
"Today's resignation of Education Commissioner Stephen Pruitt is a sad day for public education and the children of Kentucky".
Heiner stated his main priorities during his tenure was closing the skills gap in the state, ensuring post-secondary education success, and improving Kentucky's workforce participation rate. Among those on hand to support Pruitt was House Education Committee Chairman John "Bam" Carney, R-Campbellsville, an employee of Taylor County Schools.
Lewis is an associate professor at the University of Kentucky, though he told reporters he will resign to accept the role of interim commissioner.
Asked whether philosophical differences with Bevin might have played a role in his ouster, Pruitt said he hasn't had a conversation with the governor "in a long time".
On Monday, Bevin appointed seven new board members, including Hal Heiner, his Secretary of Education and Workforce Development who has long championed charter schools and feuded at times with the Kentucky Education Association.

Other appointees include Lexington business leader Kathy Gornik, Kentucky Board of Education parental adviser Tracey Cusick, Louisville entrepreneur Joe Papalia, former Bevin Communications Director Amanda Stamper, Ashland businesswoman Laura Timberlake, and Ben Cundiff, who was first appointed in 2016 to fill an unexpired term. The board then called a special meeting for Tuesday to discuss the possible dismissal of an employee. He has held our district accountable and worked alongside us to help implement action plans to increase student learning.
Kentucky has been in the spotlight due to ongoing teacher protests over pensions.
"When children are left home alone, that's not healthy", Bevin said. Bevin has been roundly criticized and drawn national attention for saying he "guarantee (s)" some children were abused or exposed to drugs or other dangers while left at home unattended as many school districts closed.
At the same press conference, Bevin named Don Parkinson, the current Secretary of the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, as Heiner's interim successor at the cabinet. Bevin said Tuesday before the board's vote he was unhappy with the state's recent decline in test scores but said the decision to keep Pruitt was up to the board.
On Tuesday morning, Bevin told reporters, "I know what I meant to speak to, which was the impact of children being left home alone".
