SCO meet No bilaterals between foreign defence ministers of India and Pakistan

Union Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj departed from New Delhi on Saturday morning for her six-day visit to China and Mongolia to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, which has been scheduled for April 24.

In China, Ms Swaraj will participate in the meeting of foreign ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Swaraj is due to meet Wang on Sunday. This will be Sushma Swaraj's first talks with Wang after he was elevated last month to be the state councillor.

"There will be no meetings with their Pakistan counterparts", official sources here said, ruling out any planned meetings between the Indian and Pakistani ministers.

Talks between Swaraj and Yi will take place in order to take forward attempts by both countries to reset ties strained by last year's 73-day Doklam military standoff as well as a host of other issues.

Last week, India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met China's senior-most diplomat Yang Jiechi in Shanghai. Besides meetings between officials from the two foreign ministries, both sides also held working mechanism meetings on border affairs and cross border rivers as well disarmament and non-proliferation dialogue in which India's entry into NSG was discussed.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is also expected in Beijing April 24 for the SCO defence ministers' meeting.

The SCO, in which China and Russian Federation play an influential role, specialises in regional security and counter terrorism and related issues. Apart from India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan are members of the group.

While Modi is scheduled to attend the SCO summit, officials say Pakistan is expected to be represented by its President Mamnoon Hussain as its Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had recently attended the Boao Forum for Asia in the Chinese city of Boao. Swaraj and Sitharaman would be in Beijing around the same time to attend their respective meetings.
