Assad returns French Legion of Honor award to US ‘slave’ following bombing of Syria
The move came days after France said a "disciplinary procedure" for withdrawing the award was under way, the BBC reported.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was honoured the highest class of the award, the grand-croix, by the Former French President Jacques Chirac after Assad took power following the death of his father.
France recently joined the United States and Britain in bombing Syrian targets over an alleged chemical weapons attack.
On April 14, the United States, France and the United Kingdom carried out a missile attack on a number of targets in Syria, including facilities in Barzeh and Jamraya, in response to the alleged attack in Douma.
A separate statement on the Syrian presidency's Facebook page added Mr Assad was "not honoured" to carry a medal for a country "supporting terrorist groups in Syria, and assaulting a United Nations member state in flagrant breach of the most basic norms and principles of worldwide law". Assad was made a knight of the Legion of Honor back in 2001, when he met former French president Jacques Chirac.
