US stocks close lower as Apple slumps
On other corporate news, Apple's shares dropped 4.10 percent to 165.72 dollars apiece Friday, notching the biggest laggard among the Dow components, after Morgan Stanley said the company's iPhone sales for the June quarter will disappoint Wall Street.
The Dow slid 38.56 points, or 0.2 percent, to 24,748.07.
The S&P 500 index rose 2.25 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,708.64.
TECH TUMBLE: Several technology companies were trading lower, extending the sector's losses this week.
The yield on the 10-year US Treasury rose ever closer to 3.0 per cent, jumping 1.3 points to 2.95 per cent, reigniting fears that Federal Reserve interest rate increases will dent the economy. Apple lost 3.4 percent. Energy companies also fell along with the price of crude oil.
General Electric's stock advanced after the industrial giant posted a surprisingly strong performance during the first three months of the year, surpassing analysts' expectations for earnings and revenue. The Nasdaq composite fell 91 points, or 1.3 percent, to 7,146.
Mattel plunged 6.3 percent after the struggling toy maker said its CEO was leaving. South Korea's Kospi lost 0.4 percent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 0.9 percent.
