World leaders have agreed to the Prince of Wales becoming the next leader of the Commonwealth after the Queen, according to sources.
British opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn, head of the Labor Party, said on Sunday that the role could go to a rotating presidency.
President Muhammadu Buhari joined other leaders of Commonwealth to confirm Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, as the new head of the group in deference to the request by his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, for him to be considered for the post.
The monarch went on to say, "By continuing to treasure and reinvigorate our associations and activities, I believe we will secure a safer, more prosperous and sustainable world for those who follow us: a world where the Commonwealth's generosity of spirit can bring its gentle touch of healing and hope to all".
Prince Charles has been confirmed as the successor to Queen Elizabeth II as the next Head of the Commonwealth. It has always been speculated by many that Charles may be passed over, in favor of his more popular son, Prince William.
Elizabeth has led the Commonwealth since 1952, when she took over the role from her late father, George VI. The decision will be taken collectively by Commonwealth heads of government, who are meeting Friday at the royal residence.
He hoped the 2018 summit would give the group "renewed relevance" to citizens, making it a "cornerstone" for future generations, as it had been for him. Succession is a matter for the Commonwealth as a whole to determine.
But in recent days, the Queen, 91, the British government and other leaders have backed Charles, 69.

"We have also listened most attentively to the young people of the Commonwealth".
Addressing leaders Thursday, Commonwealth Secretary-General Baroness Scotland said the Queen had "won a place of great affection in the hearts of people in all countries of the Commonwealth".
