The numbers on day three at the Masters

Reed ran off three straight birdies around the turn, and he stretched his lead to as many as five shots with his eagles.

Garcia will be around to be part of the championship celebration at Butler Cabin, where he will put a green jacket on the 2018 champ.

This is for themselves, not for team.

"I think we'll still be feeling it". At this major championship. Like Reed, both are seeking their first major title. All I can do is try shoot the same score again.

He paused to smile when he heard a few chuckles.

That "something else" is something grand.

"He's very good", Casey said. Reed had a three-shot lead.

Woods bogeyed the first hole. The next one was far more bold. "I just haven't gotten it done", Woods lamented.

The four-time Major victor will play alongside Reed in the final round where the two will renew their duel from the 2016 Ryder Cup where they traded birdies in a scintillating stretch of oneupmanship that was soon deemed a classic.

He was at 14-under 202.

Rickie Fowler made eagle on the par-5 second and was 5 under through eight holes. All of the normal brushing up on tournament history was done, but I also was able to find out a bit about what to expect as a member of the working press. He then drained a 25-foot birdie putt at No. 9 and a 9-footer at No. 10, and never led by less than three shots after that. "Felt like I was doing what I needed to do".

'I hit my irons bad. I just felt like from that point, the crowds were electrified. "He doesn't over-flex his arms, which you can really see in the photo here as he's going toward his finish".

McIlroy should hope he hasn't used up all his luck. But he failed to birdie No. 13 - luckily finding his ball in the azaleas and making a par - while picking up birdies on Nos. He found it, and the bushes are thin enough he could chip out of the mess and escape with par. Reed is 13 under for the 12 par-5s he's played - including birdies every day on the long 8, and eagles on the 13 and 15 in the third round. In 2011, McIlroy led going into the final round here.

The verbal gamesmanship may have started early.

While McIIroy claims all the pressure of leading the Masters is on Reed, the Texan says he won't be taking much notice of his playing partner or his other pursuers. "He has got to protect that and he has some pretty big-time players behind him". "He's got that to deal with and sleep on tonight".

Reed didn't flinch when told of McIlroy's views. "I feel like I'm putting the ball well enough", Reed said. "But at the same time, he's trying to go for the career Grand Slam". You can put it either way.

"I've been waiting for this chance, to be honest".

He's played fearless golf for three days to post rounds of 69-68-67.

As Reed said, "There's a lot of stuff that you can do at a Ryder Cup that you can't do at Augusta National".

He chipped one in from 23 yards away for an eagle at the par-5 eighth. He cooled until the end of his round, when a pair of birdies over the last two holes gave him a 65 and left him five shots behind. He was at 8-under 208.

Stenson (70) was four shots behind.

Nowhere near him are Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, the two names that generated so much of the buzz for a Masters that otherwise is living up to expectations.

Fowler's 65 launched him into third place and came after he shot 70-72 to begin the tournament.

So many others who started the third round with a chance didn't do almost enough to stay even remotely close to Reed.

However, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth will have to do the unprecedented and rally from nine back.

In 2011, a 21-year-old McIlroy led by four shots at the same stage but fell apart spectacularly, shooting 80 to tumble down the leaderboard.

Now it's the missing piece of the slam.

"We're playing a great golf tournament", said two-times Masters champion Watson, whose game clicked into gear late in the first round on Thursday. "I'm out there to play the golf course", Reed said. "Not that I have anything against Patrick".
