'Deliberate cyberattack' delays online assessments in five states
As more problems were reported Thursday with critical TNReady student testing statewide, Tennessee lawmakers responded with new rules for this year's results.
Students started taking the online standardized tests on Monday, but thousands of students couldn't log into the system. Officials with the Tennessee Department of Education distributed multiple media updates throughout the day on Tuesday. "The reliability of Questar's test have also been called into question by the state of MS and the state of NY, which are recording the Questar problems as data breaches".
Thursday the legislature voted to make sure TNReady results will not be counted against students or teachers. Education officials said on Twitter that Wednesday's issues may have been attributable to a cyber "attack".
"I want to first personally apologize to all of our teachers, our students, our parents and district and school staff who have been handling these issues with great patience and grace and a positive attitude over these last couple of days", McQueen said. Districts also can't base employment or compensation decisions based on the data, the legislation says.
That knowledge and Shelby County's own experience previous year, where unreliable test scores made results useless and thrown out has lawmakers frustrated.

On Thursday, Questar said an issue developed Tuesday that "prevented students from logging on to or submitting tests".
"It was clear many members of the General Assembly wanted to address concerns related to the recent administration of state assessments", Sara Gast, a spokesperson for the state Department of Education, said in a statement.
The problems led the state's powerful teachers' union Thursday to call for an end to computerized tests in NY until the problems are fully investigated and resolved. "The district chose earlier this year to opt out of online testing in grades five through eight in favor of paper-and-pencil testing".
The issue was chalked up to inexperience, among other issues, with the test assessment company Measurement Inc. and their Secure Testing system to administer tests on a state-wide scale.
NY officials said it had not received more details from Questar about what caused the problems Tuesday, but it came after an initial round of troubles last week.
This year's problems follow a series of issues that surrounded the Tennessee Ready exam and its implementation, including last year, which saw more than 9,000 exams scored incorrectly by exam vendor Questar Assessment. "There are an enormous amount of circumstances that surround taking the test on that side, but I feel like we don't offer very many excuses for that side, but year after year we're offering excuses for our side".
