International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde weighed in on the ongoing US-China trade dispute on Thursday, warning of the secondary impacts of protectionist measures on global confidence and investment, Reuters reports.
"That major economies are flirting with trade war at a time widespread economic expansion may seem paradoxical - especially when the expansion is so reliant on investment and trade", he said. The IMF is warning that the spectre of a trade war could mean that actual growth slows as the states involved erect barriers to trade which will effect the nations concerned but may also induce a knock-on effect.
And the fund warns that a worsening of trade conflict could have broader implications for global growth as well as market confidence.
U.S. President Donald Trump last month imposed steep tariffs on steel and aluminum imports and threatened to impose more on tens of billions of Chinese goods, prompting Beijing to respond in an escalating series of threats.
Finance officials from member governments will discuss the trade disputes this week during the Washington meetings, which end Saturday.
The IMF expressed concern about the level of debt in the world, and said much of the growth in debt has come from China.
