Faced with a federal investigation, President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen has made a decision to pick his battles and is dropping two lawsuits he filed over the Trump-Russia dossier.
Cohen had sued Fusion, a political research firm, and the media company separately in January, one year after the Russian Federation dossier, which was prepared for Fusion, was published by BuzzFeed. According to Politico, Cohen and his lawyers will now be devoting their resources to recovering the files seized during the raid.
"The decision to voluntarily discontinue these cases was a hard one", David Schwartz, a lawyer for Cohen, told Politico.
Continued Schwartz: "We believe the defendants defamed my client, and vindicating Mr. Cohen's rights was - and still remains - important".
"The lawsuits against BuzzFeed over the Steele dossier have never been about the merits of our decision to publish it", Matt Mittenthal, Director of Communications for BuzzFeed said in a statement. "If there's one thing that Democrats and Republicans agree on today, it's that the dossier was an important part of the government's investigation into potential collusion between the Trump Campaign and Russian Federation".
Cohen had not brought a case against Christopher Steele, an ex-British spy who wrote the dossier as a contractor for Fusion GPS.
Cohen figured into the document in a section claiming that he met with Russian government representatives in Prague, Czech Republic, in August 2016. The two publications were involved with the publication of the infamous Trump dossier that documented the president's alleged pee tape and other offenses.

Chelsea , who are preparing to hand Emerson Palmieri his Premier League debut on the left wing, visit Burnley on Thursday evening. The Clarets have been the surprise package of the season and are only eight points behind last campaign's champions in Chelsea .
Cohen used a pair of court filings late Wednesday to end the lawsuits he filed in January, which claimed the dossier contained a series of false assertions about him.
Apparently Cohen doesn't want to have to make any of his claims about Trump under oath, which would be required if he really hoped to win a lawsuit claiming the news organization acted improperly.
Cohen is now under criminal investigation by the FBI because of his business dealings, and insiders worry that he may flip on Trump, according to Politico. "Its interest to the public is, and always has been, obvious".
Cohen, who is the subject of a Justice Department criminal probe, arranged a $130,000 hush money payment to the adult film actress Stormy Daniels, who alleges an affair with Donald Trump. Schwartz suggested that Cohen's other legal problems have taken precedence over the lawsuits.
The Cohen decision to drop the cases came on the same day that the former Playboy model, Karen McDougal, settled a lawsuit against the owner of the National Enquirer.
There was no immediate response on Thursday to a request for comment from his lawyers.
