It might also make Kim a bigger focus of attention than Trump, something the White House will want to avoid, and which could detract from the negotiations.

President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe are scheduled to speak at 6 p.m. ET.

Trump pat himself on the back over North Korea and said his administration had achieved what his predecessors could not.

US President Donald Trump says that five locations are under consideration for his expected meeting with Kim Jong-un, the leader of nuclear-armed North Korea. The summit would be the third inter-Korean conference since the division of the peninsula in 1945.

Other Asian options mooted in the media include Singapore, where Xi and Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou met in 2015, in the first encounter between the leaders of Beijing and Taipei since they split at end of the Chinese civil war in 1949.

The key question at any summit between Trump and Kim is whether the North Korean leader is serious about dismantling his regime's nuclear weapons, and what he would demand from the U.S. in return.

The South Korean leader, due to meet Kim next week for a historic summit in the Demilitarized Zone, the border separating the two countries, said that the North was concerned about its security. He added, "Meeting went very smoothly and a good relationship was formed".

Vietnam is also reportedly under consideration - a Communist state, but one that has seen relations with the U.S. improve markedly since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, with an economy that has become increasingly vibrant in recent years. He tweeted about it actually this morning, saying denuclearization will be a great thing for the world and North Korea. (Probably why you weren't sure what the answer was to the question is North Korea in the UN.) In 2013, the UN Human Rights Council launched an investigation into those abuses.

The U.S. troops' presence in the peninsula and their joint military exercises with the South Korean forces, which North Korea usually protests as rehearsals for invasion, was sanctioned shortly after the armistice took effect, when the two countries signed the Mutual Defense Treaty in October 1953.

The peace engagement began in January this year with North Korean leader reaching out to South Korea to reduce the rising hostility in the region.

'Bright path available' The United States and North Korea-foes since a bloody, muddy hot conflict of the 1950s and the ideological battles of the Cold War-have had peace within sight before. South Korea was a member of the UN Command but was not a direct signatory. As it does this, North Korea and China will aim to isolate Japan as the last remaining place in the Asia-Pacific where US troops are permanently stationed. A new approach is needed, but there are many potential minefields that, if not carefully managed, can leave the United States worse off for holding a summit meeting.

The summit was hastily put together after Trump accepted Kim's invitation for a meeting in the next two months, and as the president prepared to implement the metals tariffs.

White House aides hoped the idyllic setting in Mar-a-Lago, with warm, sunny skies and familiar surroundings the president has found more comfortable than the White House, would help Trump focus, after a series of scandals and West Wing personnel changes that have occupied this thoughts - and Twitter account. But Wednesday brought public disagreements, as Trump spurned his guest's top economic and trade priorities.

Trump opened his remarks at the news conference by paying homage to her and her family, including former president George H.W. Bush, whom he noted had been married to Barbara for 73 years. Fourteen months later, Trump is preparing for talks with Kim, leaving Abe sidelined. The Pompeo mission has generated cautious optimism that Trump's summit with Kim, now America's main foe in Asia, will actually happen.

The official says Trump is hopeful they will be released soon.

Pompeo flew to North Korea from a United States air force base in Osan, south of Seoul, an official with South Korea's Defense Ministry said. He told Trump he was grateful for the commitment.
