Trump Warns Russia US Missiles 'Will Be Coming' to Syria

Bodies of the victims of an alleged chemical attack in rebel-held Douma Syria

US President Donald Trump has said in a tweet that Russian Federation should "get ready" for US missile strike on Syria in response to the chemical weapon attack on a town outside Damascus at the weekend.

Although officials said the singular target was Mr Assad's chemical weapons capability, his air force - including helicopters he allegedly has used to drop chemical weapons on civilians - were spared.

Explosions lit up the skies over Damascus, the Syrian capital, as Trump spoke from the White House.

Russian Federation and Iran called the use of force by the U.S. and its allies a "military crime" and "act of aggression".

While the US Defense Department is "aware" of reports of an alleged missile strike, it has dismissed the reports of any US involvement.

Asked about Mr Trump's "Mission Accomplished" assertion, Ms White said it pointed to the successful targeting of three Syrian chemical weapons sites.

Earlier, the United Nations human rights chief said world powers were treating chemical weapons use with a "collective shrug". He said at least one chemical was used - chlorine, which also has legitimate industrial uses and had not previously triggered a US military response.

The senior administration official said, "What you've seen tonight is not the end of the U.S. response".

It said this included breathing difficulties, bluish skin, mouth foaming, corneal burns and "the emission of chlorine-like odour".

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan said Thursday the U.S. has an obligation to lead an global response to the attack, and that Trump has the authority to use military force. They were launched just before 9 p.m. ET in coordination with Britain and France, according to General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Assad's Barzah research and development center in Damascus was destroyed, McKenzie said.

The second target was a chemical weapons storage facility west of Homs, which Mattis said "was the primary location of Syrian Sarin and precursor production equipment".

Trump is slated to speak with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May Thursday evening. "But our efforts have been repeatedly thwarted" by Syria and Russian Federation, she said. The area has seen a big influx of civilians and fighters from other war-torn regions. "It is not about regime change".

The Syrian government strongly denied involvement, and Russian Federation issued a stark warning in an attempt to halt retaliation.

Interviewed earlier in the week, Fehmi Khairullah of Hawthorne, who is not related to the mayor, said he did not believe Trump would take strong action against Assad, predicting it would be "another air show or missile show". US officials have been consulting with France, Britain and other allies on a possible joint military operation, but the timing remained in doubt Wednesday.

Western allies are considering intervening military action.

Trump seemed to be backtracking from his Wednesday tweet, which warned Russian Federation to brace for missiles which "will be coming". He called on Moscow to change course and join the West in seeking a more responsible regime in Damascus.

He criticized Russia's support of the Syrian regime saying "Russia must decide if it will continue down this dark path". He declared that USA relations with Russian Federation have plunged to a historic low. USA action that could bring Americans into conflict with Russian and Iranian forces could have disastrous consequences.

"Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria".

Trump ordered a missile strike against Syria in April 2017 after a separate chemical attack killed more than 80 people.

A broader question is whether the allied attacks are part of a revamped, coherent political strategy to end the war on terms that do not leave Assad in power.

Syrian state media, citing a military source, then carried a similar report.

Efforts at the UN Security Council to find a diplomatic solution failed yesterday, with Washington and Moscow opposing each other's rival motions to set up an worldwide investigation into chemical weapons use.

Trump was responding to a Russian warning on Tuesday that any USA missiles fired at Syria over the assault on a rebel enclave would be shot down and the launch sites targeted.

In his nationwide address, Trump stressed that he has no interest in a longtime fight with Syria.

"I don't want any more civilians to die", she said. "And great warriors they are". France is already involved in the US -led coalition created in 2014 to fight the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq.
