Tuition rate won't change for the 2018-19 school year, CSU chancellor says

Cal State, the nation's largest public university system, will no longer consider a plan to raise tuition for the 2018-19 academic year, Chancellor Timothy P. White announced Friday. "We support the efforts of the CSU over the next two months to persuade lawmakers that the key to California's future is to sufficiently fund the California State University as requested by the Board of Trustees".

"All of us must continue to advocate for adequate state funding that preserves quality education and improves access for qualified students", said San Diego State University President Sally Roush.

This past November, the CSU budget request sought an increase of $263 million to fund the university's most pressing needs, including the highly successful Graduation Initiative 2025, enrollment growth, obligatory increases for employee compensation, healthcare and retirement costs, facility operations and infrastructure requirements.

According to the university's website, the California State University (CSU) system is retaining, graduating and enrolling students at record levels and now awards over 110,000 degrees annually with 3.4 million alumni across its system. Additionally, the CSU trains about half of the state's teachers.

"However, we can not maintain or expand that level of success without sufficient funding", Lazier said.

Missile strikes on Syria free of casualties, Pentagon says
The Air Force says two bombers from the Ellsworth base debuted new cruise missiles during the mission in Syria last week. The Syrian military sent the missiles over on board a plane on Wednesday, the source added.

White, along with other campus presidents and university leaders, have pledged to continue to engage the legislature about prioritizing spending on higher education.

White told The Associated Press that CSU will continue to press the state Legislature for increased funding, but will not put more financial burden on students. "CSU students, faculty, staff and leaders have made a strong case for additional funding - and they are being heard", said Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, an ex officio member of the CSU Trustees. Brown will make his final decision in June, while the budget will take effect on July 1. Jerry Brown offered in his January budget proposal.

In January, the board discussed a proposal that would have raised resident tuition another four percent, or $228 per student, but chose to hold off.

Sean Murphy, university media relations coordinator, said students could vote online on April 25 and 26.

Those at the local CSU may still see an increase, however, as college administrators are considering raising student fees.
