A Turkish court on Wednesday convicted journalists and other senior staff members from the opposition Cumhuriyet newspaper on terror charges, in a case that has exacerbated concerns over press freedom.
Among them are renowned journalists, including investigative reporter Ahmet Sik, who was sentenced to seven years and six months. Atalay said they were taken "hostages" and the newspaper was demanded as a "ransom" but he added: "This newspaper can not be bought with money. our colleagues will show how to do journalism".
He added, "We denounce strongly the verdict for the legitimate work of journalists".
"As we always say they can not intimidate Cumhuriyet newspaper which will continue to tell the truth to its readers", he said.
According to the P24 press freedom group, there are over 160 journalists behind bars in Turkey, most of whom were arrested under the state of emergency imposed after the coup attempt in July 2016.
