War on terror notched a big success on Sunday when security forces killed eight militants including top commanders and motivated another to surrender in three different operations across the restive south Kashmir region.

Some of the militants downed are said to be high ranking cadres and their killing may have hit the organization badly.

He said that a youth, identified as Zubair Ahmad of Gopalpora in Kulgam district, was injured in clashes in Shopian's Kachdoora village where three terrorists have been killed with encounter still on. Both belonged to the Hizbul Mujahideen, according to police.

On the ongoing operations at Kachedoora, the DGP said there was information about the presence of four to five militants, but "we will be able to give a clear picture only after the debris is cleared". They were killed during the pre-dawn operation.

A top police officer told DH that the security forces launched all the operations at the crack of the dawn in parts of south Kashmir.

"For every 10 killed, 20 more will join until this land is freed from Indian occupation", said Imtiyaz Ahmad, a protester in Kachdora.

He further said impact would be lesser if oil prices remain lower in the global market during April. The new prices of petrol have been set at Rs86 per litre and high speed diesel (HSD) at Rs96.45.

Police officials claimed the militants tried to escape from a security cordon while firing their guns and grenades but were killed in the ensuing fighting.

In one of the worst rounds of armed clashes between the security forces and militants in recent years, the fighting took place in two places in Shopian district and a third spot in Anantnag district in southern Kashmir.

"The joint resistance leadership calls for a shutdown tomorrow against the killings and atrocities on people in south Kashmir".

Six other civilians sustained bullet injuries, out of which two later succumbed in hospita. "In Dialgam Anantnag we caught one militant alive and the other one who fired upon army was killed in the retaliatory fire". J&K police chief and 15 Corps commander are addressing the presser in the afternoon.

The authorities also suspended train services in Kashmir as a precautionary step. Meanwhile, the family of the terrorist also tried to persuade him to surrender.
