UEFA condemns Michael Oliver abuse

Police give security support to Michael Oliver and his wife

Buffon was sent off for dissent by English referee Michael Oliver after he awarded Real Madrid a stoppage-time penalty which sent the Spaniards into the semi-finals.

Northumberland match official Oliver took charge of West Ham's Premier League clash with Stoke this evening after the leading referees´ group (PGMOL) condemned the abuse directed at the referee.

Massimiliano Allegri's men were denied extra-time in Madrid on Wednesday thanks to a controversial late penalty that Cristiano Ronaldo converted to send Los Blancos through 4-3 on aggregate, but it was business as usual in Serie A on Sunday, with the reigning champions comfortably extending their lead.

Following the match, Lucy Oliver's Twitter account was targeted by some supporters posting abusive messages.

The 40-year-old Italian icon later called Oliver "a murderer" with "a rubbish bin" in place of a heart.

"We are aware of threatening messages being posted on social media."

"This type of behaviour is completely unacceptable and those writing the messages need to be aware that they could be committing a criminal offence".

Juventus complained bitterly that Oliver had got it wrong and their goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was sent off for barging into the referee during their furious protests.

On Saturday, Buffon said in an interview that he would repeat the comments all over again but in "more civil" language.

"These vituperous attacks on Michael Oliver and his wife are repugnant", he said on Twitter.

Medhi Benatia clumsily tackled Lucas Vazquez from behind to give away the spot-kick, with Juventus' players reacting to the decision by swarming Oliver.

"It's sad that he couldn't understand Buffon's emotional reaction in a situation like that".
