Palestinians gather to receive lunch packages after Friday prayers during a during a tent city protest near the border with Israel east of Gaza City to commemorate Land Day on March 30, 2018.

Brig Gen Ronen Manelis, the chief army spokesman, denied allegations of excessive use of force, saying those killed by Israeli troops were men between the ages of 18 and 30 who were involved in violence and belonged to militant factions.

United Nations deputy political affairs chief Taye-Brook Zerihoun told the council the situation in Gaza "might deteriorate in the coming days" and called for civilians, particularly children, not to be targeted, Reuters news agency reports.

The protest, which also coincided with Good Friday and the start of the Jewish holiday of Passover, is scheduled to culminate on 15 May, the day Palestinians commemorate what they call the "Nakba", or "Catastrophe" when the Israeli state was created.

The violence broke out as tens of thousands of Gazans marched near the Israeli border to demand the right of return for Palestinian refugees who fled or were expelled since the creation of Israel.

In a statement released Friday evening, the IDF said it blamed Hamas for "all events and incidents taking place in today's protests".

The Israeli military has defended its handling of clashes in Gaza which left 16 Palestinians dead even as footage emerged appearing to show unarmed protesters being shot by Israeli snipers.

Washington's plans to launch its new embassy to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the Israeli state, further stoking Palestinian anger.

The Palestinian health ministry says at least five people have been killed and 350 wounded, many of them by Israeli gunfire.

Three Facebook Messenger app users file lawsuit over privacy breaches
Facebook permissions have included an opt-in to access text message and phone call data through user's Android mobile devices. They say the data is used "to improve people's experience across Facebook" by helping to connect with others.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas had declared Saturday a day of national mourning and in a speech said he held Israel fully responsible for the deaths.

The Israeli foreign ministry has said the protest is a "deliberate attempt to provoke a confrontation with Israel" and that "responsibility for any clashes lies exclusively with Hamas and other participating Palestinian organisations". It argues that refugees should resettle in a future state the Palestinians seek in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza.

The Israeli military said the two were militants who had opened fire at troops across the border.

Palestinians accused Israel of using disproportionate force, while human rights groups questioned Israel's use of live fire.

Adalah, a legal centre for Palestinian rights in Israel, condemned the Israeli army's use of force, calling it a violation of worldwide law.

Israeli security forces used a drone to fire tear gas toward those along the border, in one of the first uses of the device, a police spokesman said.

"There was no small number of attempts to damage the fence and cross" the border, she added.

But the "March of Return" protest that began on Friday is on a larger scale and meant to involve families with women and children camping in tent cities near the border for weeks.
