European Union officials are set to reject a potential United Kingdom solution to the crucial issue of what happens to the Irish border after Brexit, deepening the stalemate in negotiations.

However, no solution has yet been found for any customs checks needed after Brexit and a backstop plan could effectively isolate the Northern Ireland economy from mainland Britain. This would remove the possibility of a hard border in Northern Ireland, but it is opposed by hardline Conservative MPs.

Avoiding a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland has become one of the biggest obstacles in clinching an agreement to settle Britain's withdrawal from the EU. That would go a long way to solve the Irish border issue and would also please businesses that are keen on keeping cross-border trade easy. In December, the two sides agreed on a backstop that would have applied to the whole of the United Kingdom, rather than just Northern Ireland.

The EU risks accusations that it's reneging on its December pledge.

A UK Government spokesman insisted that Britain was "continuing an intensive work programme to engage" on all the scenarios set out in the Joint Report agreed in December by Mrs May and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker.

Foyle MLA Mr. McCartney said: "With this British Border Force recruitment drive, the British Government is clearly planning to impose their hard Brexit border across the island of Ireland". She proposed two options for avoiding a hard border in Northern Ireland.

Theresa May and the United Kingdom government are running out of time to come up with a solution over the border issue; Michel Barnier, the EU's chief Brexit negotiator, has previously called for a final withdrawal agreement to be made by October of this year before Britain's exit from the European Union becomes official in March 2019. A separate, non-legally binding document setting out the parameters of the future UK-EU relationship will sit alongside it.

The Daily Telegraph quoted unnamed European Union diplomatic sources as saying that the Brussels officials delivered "a detailed and forensic rebuttal", making clear that "none of the United Kingdom customs options will work - none of them".

A "customs partnership" in which the United Kingdom would collect duties on the EU's behalf for goods that were destined for the EU.
