The UN Security Council held emergency talks yesterday to discuss the risks of further escalation in Israeli-Palestinian violence in the Gaza Strip but failed to agree a joint statement on the deadly clashes.
Kuwait convened it hours after the bloodiest day in Gaza since the 2014 cross-border war between Israel and Hamas, the Islamic militant group that rules the coastal strip.
The ambassador, whose delegation requested an emergency meeting of the Security Council after Israeli soldiers reportedly killed at least 15 Palestinian protesters and wounded about one thousand others along the border fence, said the Israeli military was in violation of global humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions.
The Israeli military said its troops used "riot dispersal means" to quell one of the largest Palestinian demonstrations and outbursts of violence along the border in recent years.
Reaffirming the readiness of the world body to revitalise peace efforts, United Nations secretary general for political affairs, Taye-Brook Zerihoun said in NY that there is fear that the situation might deteriorate in the coming days.
The Palestinian ambassador, Riyad Mansour, said he was disappointed the security council did not coalesce to condemn what he called a "heinous massacre" of peaceful demonstrators, or to support his call to provide protection for Palestinian civilians.
Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon said "the global community must not be deceived" by what he termed "a well-organized and violent terror-gathering" under the banner of a peaceful march.

The violence broke out as tens of thousands of Gazans marched near the Israeli border to demand the right of return for Palestinian refugees who fled or were expelled since the creation of Israel.
