Valve Moves Away From “Steam Machine” By Removing It From Steam

It's clear Steam Machines are no longer a priority for Valve, which couldn't overcome the product category's nebulous target consumer.

See page for author [Public domain], via Wikimedia CommonsValve has quietly removed the Steam Machines link from Steam's website, as first noted by GamingOnLinux.

While you can still access a Steam store page linking to four remaining Steam Machine partners through a direct link, Steam Machines no longer show up under the drop-down menu for "Hardware" on the main Steam store page. The models that still exist include the Maingear Drift, which still comes with the old hardware, and Syber's Steam Machine, according to PC World. Gamers could get a Core i7 CPU and high-end GPU that can run AAA titles. While SteamOS has been seeing consistent - if not always visible - improvement over the last few years, the market for Steam Machines seems to have stagnated.

Russia's Foreign Ministry Summons Western Ambassadors Over Ex-spy Poisoning Dispute

KitGuru Says: Steam Machines came at a time when Valve was anxious about the future of Windows, and the potential threat of Microsoft locking PC gaming down. SteamOS was an albatross around Valve's neck.

The final nail in the coffin for Steam Machines may have come from Valve itself. Even the least expensive Steam Machines cost more than a home console, and gamers can assemble a better PC for much less. In late 2015, it released the Steam Link. The Steam Link in particular could have something to do with declining interest in Steam Machines, as it's a fairly affordable device that allows users to stream games from their PC to their TV over their local network. Did any of you guys try out a Steam Machine at some point? The original price was just $50, and Valve is basically giving them away right now.
