Clouds of Venus May Host Alien Life Study
Scientists believe that the clouds on Venus could make the faraway planet vital in the quest to find extraterrestrial life.
The NASA-backed report reads: "Our comparative analyses support the blended hypotheses that terrestrial-type biology can survive within and contribute to the spectral signatures of Venus' clouds".
The study to explore habitability of Venus' clouds led by Sanjay Limaye of the University of Wisconsin-Madison was further inspired by his visit to Tso Kar, a high-altitude salt lake in Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir.
When it comes to Earth, various microorganisms like bacteria are fully able to drift up into the atmosphere of our planet, and have even been discovered by scientists as high up as 25 miles.
"To really know, we need to go there and sample the clouds", biological chemist Rakesh Mogul, study co-author and professor at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, said, adding that Venus could be "an exciting new chapter in astrobiology exploration". Similarly, the atmosphere of Venus is mostly made up of sulphuric acid water droplets and carbon dioxide and it is packed with highly reflective and acidic cloudy atmosphere.
According to Tech Times, The idea that the clouds of Venus are potentially habitable was proposed decades ago by biophysicist Harold Morowitz and astronomer Carl Sagan.

Perhaps the most convincing argument in favor of life on Venus is the fact that a series of space probes launched to the planet between 1962 and 1978 showed that temperature and pressure levels in the lower and middle layers of its atmosphere (40 to 60 kilometers / 25 to 27 miles) could harbor microbial life as we know it.
While Venus is of a similar size to Earth, it has an incredibly inhospitable surface - with a temperature that's twice the maximum setting in a kitchen oven.
"Venus shows some episodic dark, sulfuric rich patches, with contrasts up to 30-40 percent in the ultraviolet, and muted in longer wavelengths. These patches persist for days, changing their shape and contrasts continuously and appear to be scale dependent", says Limaye. Limaye and colleagues now suggest the possibility these patches could be comparable to algae blooms that can be found on Earth's bodies of water.
One possibility for sampling the clouds of Venus, says Limaye, is on the drawing board: VAMP, or Venus Atmospheric Maneuverable Platform, a craft that flies like a plane but floats like a blimp and could stay aloft in the planet's cloud layer for up to a year gathering data and samples.
Researchers say that Venus is a planet on which life, if spawned, have had enough time to evolve owing to presence of liquid water on its surface for nearly 2 billion years.
