The weekend's air strikes marked the biggest intervention by Western countries against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his ally Russian Federation, which is facing further economic sanctions over its role in the conflict.
Analysts expect S&P 500 company profits to rise 18.6 per cent in the first quarter, the biggest increase in seven years, according to Thomson Reuters data. "There's a nice little turbo boost being given by the tax reform legislation", said Kristina Hooper, chief global market strategist at Invesco, in NY.
"Investors seem to be ignoring that which is not positive."
The bank's profit, however, beat Wall Street's expectations, with net income rising 27 per cent to $US2.7 billion.
Netflix (NFLX.O) shares gained around 7 percent after the market closed following its quarterly report.
Ten of 11 major S&P sectors were higher, led by the technology index's .SPLRCT 2.2-percent gain.
"Strong first quarter sales gives us comfort over the detailed guidance we gave in March", Chief Financial Officer Antoine Giscard d'Estaing told analysts, Reuters reported. It had ended the regular session down 1.2 percent.
At 12:58 p.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 282.95 points, or 1.16 percent, at 24,643.09, the S&P 500 was up 26.01 points, or 0.98 percent, at 2,682.31 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 60.76 points, or 0.85 percent, at 7,167.41.

Shares of optical components makers, including those of Acacia Communications (ACIA.O) and Oclaro (OCLR.O), took a beating after Reuters reported that the USA government was banning American companies from selling components to Chinese telecom equipment maker ZTE Corp 0000063.SZ(0763.HK).
"Barring any unforeseen negative news, geopolitical, economic, political, perhaps we'll end up today the way we ended up yesterday - which was at or near highs for popular averages", said Ted Weisberg, a trader with Seaport Securities in NY.
Bank of America (BAC.N) rose 0.44 percent after a bigger-than-expected increase in quarterly profit.
Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 2.77-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 2.14-to-1 ratio favoured advancers. Monday's trading compared with the 7.03 billion average for the last 20 sessions.
