Warmest April day in decades in United Kingdom as temperatures hit 28.8C

Thursday was the hottest April day for almost 70 years, with the mercury soaring to 29.1C (84F) in St James' Park in London.

The balmy spell peaked in the south-east of England, where it was hotter than Spain and Italy, The Guardian reported.

Elsewhere temperatures had this afternoon reached 21.2C (70.2F) in Plymouth and 21.8C (71.2F) in Cardiff, while Scotland had seen a high of 19.7C (67.5F) in Kinloss, and Northern Ireland enjoyed a mild 18.7C (65.7F) in Derrylin, Co Fermanagh.

The London Marathon is forecast to be the hottest yet, with a high of 23C (73F) possible, beating the 1996 record of 22.7C (72.9F).

The heatwave comes just over a month after the United Kingdom was struggling with snow and ice from the "beasts from the east", which prolonged the winter well into March. Conditions will be mild across the United Kingdom, with Northern Ireland likely to push 19C in some parts and a peak of 20C possible in Aberdeenshire in Scotland, the forecaster said.

By comparison, the average maximum temperature for April is a mere 11.4C (52.5F).

Warm air from the Azores, off the coast of Portugal, has been dragged up towards the United Kingdom by the combined efforts of an area of low pressure over the Atlantic and high pressure over western Europe, a Met Office spokesman said.

Meteorologist Alex Burkill said: "There's a fairly good chance of 28C, there's about a 60% chance".

'After quite a tiresome and chilly start to spring this is the first bout of real warm sunshine that we've seen, ' he said.

Sunday was not expected to be as hot although forecasts of 23 deg C in the capital would make it the warmest London Marathon on record.

Thursday's temperatures are expected to better this, too, with 26C (78.8F) expected in some parts of the country.

Conditions may be especially hard for fancy-dress runners, including the nearly 100 attempting Guinness World Records dressed in outfits like a suit of armour, a Paddington Bear costume and ski boots.

"There could be a shower but it's not very likely".

It said there may be some isolated showers breaking out during the afternoon in the east. Winds will be light and mainly offshore, but where onshore breezes develop it will feel cooler.

Some hay fever sufferers could be affected by high pollen counts, he added. "Grass pollen season comes later in summer".
