Amazon is turning William Gibson's 'The Peripheral' into a series
Joy and Nolan, via their Warner Bros.
The project marks another big swing at the science fiction and fantasy genres favored by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who a year ago issued a directive to the company's entertainment division to focus less on niche programming and more on projects that could develop into the digital giant's own "Game of Thrones".
Scott B. Smith, author of A Simple Plan and The Ruins, will write the script and serve as an executive producer. Steven Hoban (Splice) and his producing partner Vincenzo Natali (Westworld) also will exec produce, with the latter set to direct the drama.
The story follows Flynne in a near future America in which technology has started to subtly alter society.
The Peripheral takes place in two different futures, which are mysteriously connected through a virtual reality game. Television and Amazon Studios.

Nolan and Joy are repped by WME. The HBO drama reaped 22 Emmy nominations and was the network's most-watched freshman drama ever. Natali is with CAA and Gotham Group.
Season 2 of Westworld, which Nolan and Joy co-created based on the 1973 film, and executive produce, premieres this Sunday.
