White House coherence on Russian Federation sanctions questioned as Nikki Haley rebukes staff
One anonymous administration official told the Washington Post that Haley got ahead of herself and made "an error that needs to be mopped up". "As far as he was concerned, he had decided no such thing", The New York Times reports.
Russian Federation said Wednesday that it has received word that the US has no plans for further sanctions after confusion over the issue involving U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who announced fresh sanctions only to be contradicted by the White House. The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to describe private discussions.
Haley's hawkish stance on Russia has put her at odds with the White House before, but in the wake of strikes against Syria and threats of Russian retaliation, it's more important than ever for USA foreign policy officials to be on the same page. On Tuesday, after national economics adviser Larry Kudlow tried to claim the reversal had been her error, Haley hit back, telling Fox News in a statement, "With all due respect, I don't get confused".
Haley struck back later Tuesday that raised questions about the White House's explanation of her comments.
"She got ahead of the curve", National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow told reporters on Tuesday near the President's Florida estate, a day after a report claiming Trump "put the brakes" on plans for new Russian Federation sanctions.

Privately, Trump was "annoyed" at the confusion, a senior administration official said, one of the rare instances in which Haley has drawn his ire.
The officials said a decision was then made to announce the sanctions as an answer to Russia's response to the strikes.
The sanctions were to have been announced Monday by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, but Trump conferred with his national security advisers later Sunday and told them he was upset the sanctions were being officially rolled out because he was not yet comfortable executing them, according to several people familiar with the plan.
The officials said Monday it was unlikely Trump would approve any additional sanctions without another triggering event by Russian Federation, describing the strategy as being in a holding pattern. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement Monday, "We are considering additional sanctions on Russian Federation and a decision will be made in the near future".
