Cook stated that a merger of the two operating systems - one for PCs, and the latter for smartphones and iPads - would require diluting one of the systems, reported Engadget.

The project codenamed "Marzipan" was aimed at exploring possibility to develop apps that will work on both iOS and MacOS and hints that Apple could be willing to experiment.
Cook also revealed that he generally uses a Mac at work, but when he's at home or travelling, he prefers to use the iPad. "And I always use the iPad when I'm traveling".
In some instances macOS users would probably benefit from having access to iOS apps and vice versa.
