Forecasters warned of unsafe, life-threatening wildfire conditions in parts of the Southwest and Southern Plains on Tuesday, as a forestry official warned firefighters battling a terrifying deadly blaze in Oklahoma that it would be a "historically critical day".

"At least one Type 6 Engine was burned over and destroyed yesterday".

Firefighters and air support scrambled to suppress the fires, which have burned across hundreds of thousands of acres since Thursday.

El Paso County Sheriff Bill Elder praised fire crews on Wednesday for protecting so much property despite a lack of air support because of winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour (96 kph) on Tuesday.

Gusting winds, low humidity and drought-stricken land fuel the blazes.

Task Force 2 from Garfield County, which is made up of firefighters from Covington, Hunter and Lahoma, were sent to help earlier Tuesday.

Fire weather conditions are expected to be near critical Wednesday, with temperatures topping out in the upper 70s with wind gusts up to 39 miles per hour anticipated, according to the weather service.
