A crash between a transport truck and a bus carrying a junior hockey team in western Canada has left 14 people dead and others seriously injured, Canadian police said.

Broncos coach Darcy Haugan was killed in the accident, his sister later told CBC television, though the identity of other victims has not yet been revealed.

The bus collided with a semi-trailer truck. The Broncos were about 20 minutes away from their destination at the time of the crash.

"Brody had recently joined our Golden West family, mentored by Tyler and the Bolt FM team", Lydon Frieson, president of Golden West Radio, said in a statement posted on the station's website.

The victims were dispatched by helicopter and ambulance to care centres in nearby Saskatoon.

Police said the truck driver was detained but later released.

The driver, who was the lone occupant of the tractor-trailer, was not injured in the collision, Zablocki said.

Investigators say it's still too early to say what caused the crash.

"He is one of the most adventurous, ambitious, and loving people that I have ever been blessed to know", she said in a Facebook post.

The lorry and bus collided on Friday at around 17:00 local time on Highway 35, north of Tisdale in the province of Saskatchewan.

"From a grieving province, thank you to every one of the first responders and medical professionals for your courageous response under the most hard circumstances imaginable".
