Yawkey charity 'disappointed' with name change

Yawkey Way is named after former Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey, and Yawkey's Red Sox were the last team in the majors to promote an African-American player.

The street, named for former Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey, will be changed back to its original moniker, Jersey Street, the Boston Globe reported.

The letter stops short of calling on the Public Improvement Commission to reject the request to change the name of Yawkey Way, a request that was based on allegations that Yawkey and the Red Sox have a history of discrimination against blacks. "But for me, personally, the street name has always been a consistent reminder that it is our job to ensure the Red Sox are not just multi-cultural, but stand for as numerous right things in our community as we can - particularly in our African-American community and in the Dominican community that has embraced us so fully".

Fenway Park has a new address. Yawkey's defenders point to the charitable Yawkey Foundation, which has helped fund programs to help minority neighborhoods in Boston. As we noted when the proposal was first made, having the name Yawkey on it contradicted that mission, given Yawkey's track record as team owner. By the late 1960s, black players were Red Sox stars and non-white players have been central to the team's three World Series championships since 2004. "Through the Yawkey Foundations they left nearly all of their wealth for people in need, regardless of their color".

Yawkey Way is the street Fenway Park is on.

Boston city officials did not make it clear on Thursday when the street signs will be changed.

But the letter suggests what others who have opposed the name change have argued: that the name Yawkey Way is inseparable from the work of the Yawkey Foundations, and so changing the name of the street by Fenway Park would taint the legacy of the foundations and their charitable work.
