Zimbabwe fires all striking nurses, to hire unemployed nurses and recall retired staff

Zimbabwe has fired all nurses who went on strike to demand higher salaries, in a hardline response by the country's new leadership to growing labor arrest.

Chiwenga was the military general who led the ousting of Robert Mugabe in November when the army briefly took control and ushered Emmerson Mnangagwa into the presidency.

In a statement issued by the vice president, Constantino Chiwenga, government accused the striking nurses of ignoring the transfer of $17,114,446 transferred to the health ministry's account to address their grievances.

The strike by the nurses comes on the heels of a similar industrial action by doctors last month, also demanding better pay and working conditions.

"General Chiwenga to the grievances of hardworking nurses, who have been enduring hard conditions of service for many years now is insensitive and shows disappointing leadership", ZimRights said in a statement.

This action is typical of the dictatorship that has existed in Zimbabwe since the time of Mugabe.

A statement from Vice President Constantino Chiwenga said the move to discharge the nurses was in the interest of suffering patients.

Reacting to the statement, Zimbabwe's nurses' association said the nurses remained on strike.

The vice president stated that the funds would now be used to employ new nurses.

The association, which has more than 16,000 members, said the strike will continue until money is in nurses' hands.

The nurses want to be paid other allowances they say were promised by the government in 2010 but never delivered.

The lowest paid nurse in Zimbabwe earns a gross monthly salary of $284 before allowances, according to Dongo.

Mnangagwa will stand in elections set for July against a revitalized opposition Movement for Democratic Change party led by 40-year-old Nelson Chamisa.
